Are you job hunting? Have you updated your resume?
If you haven’t been on the job hunt for several years, you may need to make your resume more current. With the national unemployment rate at 8.2%, you may need every advantage you can get. Get the attention of the hiring manager by updating your outdated resume!
Here are 10 easy steps to update your resume:
- The one-page rule for resumes is a thing of the past. If you have 10, 15, or 20 years of experience consider a 2 or 3 page resume.
- If your resume includes a fax number, replace that with your email address.
- Choose a font other than Courier for your resume to keep it from appearing outdated.
- Include live hyperlinks within your resume to your email address and to your LinkedIn profile.
- Speaking of LinkedIn, it is the new source for references. Remove “References available upon request.”
- Do not use Summary or Objective statements. Instead, share the title of the position you are looking for to grab the attention of the recruiter.
- Delete any reference to personal attributes – focus on accomplishments and business value instead.
- When entering information about previous employers, place the dates worked to the right of the employer name.
- Search through your resume. If there is any outdated or irrelevant work history and experience, replace with recent training or professional awards.
- Make your resume available in multiple formats like Text Only, Microsoft Word and .PDF.
